Wuogon probe: No armed men at polling stations – EC

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Mrs Jean Mensa, has denied there were armed men or intimidating police officers at some polling stations during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Some heavily-armed operatives shot and wounded supporters of the NDC at the private residence of the party’s candidate about an hour into the by-election on Thursday, 31 January 2019.

Some civilians were also beaten up, including a Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Sam George. He was slapped in the melee in the full glare of some police officers.

The gun-related violence disrupted the voting process at the La-Bawaleshie JHS polling station.

According to Mrs Mensa, the security officers deployed by the police at the polling stations were unarmed.

“There were no armed men who were manning any of the polling stations,” Mrs Mensa told the Commission of Inquiry tasked to probe the matter led by Emile Short.

On the second day of the Commission’s sitting, Ms Mensa said it was “not true” that the electorate were intimidated by gun-wielding men.

“I had the opportunity to visit about 15 polling stations and there were no armed men. Nobody has reported the presence of intimidating armed men,” she added.

In her view, the “shooting did not occur at the polling station.”
