Gov’t Rolls Out Community Mining Scheme At Tarkw

Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker has operationalized the Tarkwa Community Mining Scheme to provide alternative mining livelihoods in the locality.

A durbar attended by Chiefs and residents was held on Friday, November 5, 2021 to commemorate the operationalization ceremony which activates the Scheme launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on October 25 this year at Tarkwa.

The Deputy Minister, who doubes as Tarkwa-Nsuaem Member of Parliament (MP), urged the management of the Community Mining Scheme to adhere to all provisions in line with legal mining in Ghana.

The project is aimed at creating over 1000 jobs for the people of Tarkwa.

”A mercury-free gold processing equipment worth US$ 100,000.00 was donated by government to the Scheme to support their operations”, the Deputy Minister disclosed.

He also launched the Small-Scale and Community Mining Operational Manual which is a ”blueprint document that outlines the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and legal framework in undertaking sustainable small-scale mining in Ghana”.

Nana Kwabena Gyan II, Chief of Mahamo, speaking on behalf of Tarkwa-Nsuaem Chiefs, commended the sector Minister, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor and Hon. Mireku Duker’s efforts as well as government for this employment initiative.

Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, Western Regional Minister, also advised the residents and miners in the community not to engage in any illegalities.

He further implored them to embrace the government’s Community Mining Scheme agenda.

The Deputy Minister was accompanied by Mr. Benjamin Aryee; Advisor on Mines, Mr. Samuel Tika; Deputy CEO of Minerals Commission and other officials.
