The Electoral Commission has canceled its plan to conduct voters registration on Friday 31st July which has been declared a statutory public holiday to mark the celebration of Eid-Al-Adha.

Member of Parliament for Asawase in the Ashanti Region, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka berated the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa for the latter’s decision to allow registration on the day which is a big occasion on the Muslim calendar.

Speaking on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, the Asawase lawmaker said the EC Boss’ action demonstrates gross insensitivity.

“The original time-table that was issued that acknowledged 31st July as a resting day, because its a special day for us(Muslims Christmas day) has now been altered by the EC Boss,” he told host Bonohene Baffuor Awuah.

“Are you even thinking about other people”? he questioned, claiming the EC’s plan is to largely disenfranchise the Muslim community but warned that they’re not letting their guard down.

But in a statement released by the EC, the electoral management body informs the public that it has reverted to the original timetable for the last phase of the 2020 voters registration exercise.

In view of this, the EC said the last and final phase of the voters registration exercise will take place from 1st – 6th of August, as earlier scheduled.

“The Public is hereby informed that the Commission will not undertake the Voters Registration Exercise on Friday the 31st of July, 2020. The voters registration exercise will resume on Saturday the 1st of August to Thursday the 6th of August 2020. The Commission apologizes for any inconvenience caused by its earlier release. 

“The Commission takes this opportunity to wish all Muslims a Happy Eid al-Adha,” the statement added.
