The Government of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa today, 11 June 2021, earmarked five million trees to be planted across the country as an initial programme under its Green Ghana Project.
Themed, “Let’s Go Planting 5million Trees in One Day”, the exercise under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in collaboration with Forestry Commission, mobilised Ghanaians to plant trees and nurture them to maturity as a way of contributing to the preservation of the environment.
In the Bosome-Freho district in the Ashanti region where over five thousand trees were allocated, the exercise started at the Assembly premises at Asiwa and continued to neighboring communities.
Planting the first tree, the Chief Executive Hon. Yaw Danso, noted with concern the wanton deforestation greatly affecting undomesticated animal species in the bush and warned if the trend is not halted it would affect the life-span of humans as well, hence the need to plant the trees to preserve our environment and also for the future generation.
On nurturing the trees to maturity, Hon. Yaw Danso indicated that Forestry Commission would provide guidelines for planting the seedlings and take care of the young trees in the forest reserves, while the brigade corps under the Youth in Afforestation would cater for the trees in the urban areas.
“Tree is of significance to the survival of human beings. You’ve heard that when the last tree dies, the last human being also dies but have we taken time to interrogate this statement?’’, he asked .
