Former Central Regional Chairman of the NDC), Bernard Kojo Allotey Jacobs

Former Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is questioning the motive of his party naming 51 people said to be relatives and cronies in government.

Bernard Allotey Jacobs said the time wasted on such venture could have been used to campaign vigorously at the grassroots ahead of the 2020 general election.

At a press conference Tuesday, the National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi listed 51 names of relatives and cronies which he said pointed to “classic and unprecedented” nepotism within the Akufo-Addo government.

The list includes the entire nuclear family of Nana Asante Bediatuo who is a cousin to the President and is also his Executive Secretary.

This conduct by President Akufo-Addo, Mr Gyamfi stressed is against a promise he made in January 2016 ahead of the general election to eschew nepotism and cronyism.

But, Mr Jacobs on Accra-based Peace FM, Wednesday was certain just listing names of cronies in government won’t win the party elections.

He explained that, friends and family in government started in the days of King David in the Bible.

“David was surrounded by his siblings, nephews and nieces. The commander of the Israeli army was a nephew of David,” he said.

The former NDC chairman added that, even during Moses’ time, his elder brother was a high priest and his sister was a prophetess.

Given this backdrop, Mr Jacobs said nepotism is as old as Adam and all political parties are guilty.
