The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) is pushing for what it calls realistic tariffs for consumers.

According to the union, this will ensure that consumers pay tariffs that are commensurate with the operations of the companies.

The Union said the subsidies government pays for consumers cripple utility companies.

Per the structure, if government takes off subsidies on tariffs for small residential consumers; they may pay over 400 per cent increment on tariffs.

This means consumers will be paying GHS 1.90 per kilowatt of power instead of the 39 pesewas per kilowatt being paid currently.

Speaking to Citi News on how subsidies are crippling the utility companies, the General Secretary of PUWU, Michael Adumattah Nyantakyi said government should review the current regime.

“We want to urge the government to ensure that the tariffs are adequate to ensure that the services provided by both electricity and water are being sustainable and that which the country can afford.”
