Parliament today vetted the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nominee as the Deputy Minister for Health Dr. Benard Oko-Boye as part of its prior approval duties enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

The president’s nominee told Parliament’s Appointments Committee that he will fully commit his time, expertise and energy to his new assignment if given the nod.

President Akufo-Addo in a recent reshuffle named the Ledzokuku lawmaker as the Deputy Minister responsible for Health-designate to take over from Gomoa West MP Alexander Kodwo Abban who was moved to the Communications Ministry.

The nomination came after the MP and the Board Chairman of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital received several plaudits for his communication skills, especially as the country continues to battle the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

The Deputy Minister-designate disclosed to the Committee that the government will support the use of herbal medicines to treat coronavirus should they be approved by the appropriate authorities.

He justified government’s decision to implement a partial lockdown instead of a total national lockdown in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and stressed that the measures put in place by government is sufficient to manage the spread.

The MP explained that the growing numbers of the reported cases are largely due to the large numbers of samples being tested since the first cases were recorded on March 11 this year.

He indicated that though government continues to receive donations to aid its fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the establishment of a committee to oversee the disbursement of the Covid-19 funds should not be a major priority at this time.

Parliament is scheduled to sit on Friday to consider the report on today’s vetting by the Appointments Committee.
