Prostitutes have criticized government for not allowing them to move about freely and ply their trade following a lockdown in major cities, arguing that their work must be considered as essential service and concessions granted them to move about and serve their numerous clients.

Their protests follow the imposition of a 21-day lockdown in the Kenyan cities of Nairobi, Kilifi and Mombasa, identified as places baldly hit by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The Prostitutes argue that the lockdown has denied them their daily earnings and has caused stress and tension in homes due to the lockdown that denies men from accessing their services.

The Prostitutes, according to local Kenyan media, insist that the closure of bars and beaches, and ban on public gatherings have literally put paid to their work.

“Since the scourge started, we have incurred losses. The closure of bars, restaurants and clubs as a result of the curfew has rendered 90 per cent of sex workers jobless. These were the places where we could get our daily bread,” High Voice Africa chairlady, Maryline Laini, told facetoface.com.

Mombasa is a popular tourist city owing to its beaches. It attracts thousands of visitors annually, making it a hub for prostitution.

“We all have bills to pay, rent among many other financial obligations, how will we survive?” Ms Kitili quizzed.

Even though, prostitution remain illegal in Kenya, it is widely practiced with occasional crackdowns from security agencies.
