Traditional Council wants schools to boycott parade in ‘troubled’ Japekrom

The Japekrom Traditional Council in the Jaman South Municipality of the Bono Region is urging all schools in the area to boycott this year’s 6th March parade at New Drobo in the interest of their safety which cannot be guaranteed.

According to the Traditional Council, this follows the incident that happened on October 17, 2018 where three persons died during the celebration of the Munufie Festival.

Japerkrom and its neighbouring communities have since been placed under a curfew after the incident.
The concerns were captured in a letter signed by the Omanehene of Mpusua-Japekrom Traditional Area, Nana Amoa Aturu Nkonkonkyia II, addressed to the Municipal Director in the Jaman South and sighted by Citi News.
The schools which have been advised to boycott the 6th March Parade include Our Lady of Providence SHS at Kwasibourkrom, Japekrom Presby  Primary and JHS, Methodist Primary and JHS, Japekrom, Islamic Primary and JHS, Japekrom and TI Ahmadiya Primary, Japekrom.
The rest are  Bonoa Preparatory, Japekrom, RC Primary JHS, Kwasibourkrom, El Shadai Preparatory, Kwasibourkrom, Redeemer Preparatory and JHS, Kwasibourkrom and Basakrom Primary.
According to the Traditional Council, they cannot trust the Municipal Police to protect the students as they allegedly side with the chiefs and people of New Drobo.
They also claimed that the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Alhaji Abuu does not represent the interest of the people of Mpuasu- Japekrom Traditional Area and cannot be trusted in offering protection to the procession and gathering at the parade.

“Consequently, we wish to humbly inform you of the decision by the Mpuasu- Japekrom Traditional Council not to have pupils and students from schools in the under-listed communities particular in 6th March 2019 Parade and any other cultural or sporting activities organized at New Drobo,” Nana Amoa Aturu Nkonkonkyia II noted in the letter.

There was also trouble in Japekrom in October 2018 over a shooting incident by some unknown assailants in Drobo, a rival town.
Official Police report said two persons were confirmed dead, while 14 others were in critical condition.
The communities were eventually slapped with a dawn to dusk curfew.
The curfew imposed on the two communities is yet to be lifted.
