I knew my victory was non-negotiable but my ‘leaked tape’ pushed the numbers up – Asiedu Nketiah

Chairman Asiedu Nketia

The National Chairman of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has begun talking about the strategies he deployed to ensure his victory over the outgone National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo in the just-ended NDC congress.

According to the new National Chairman, he knew his victory over Ofosu-Ampofo was non-negotiable because he had faith in the delegates of the party.

But “I did not know the margins by which the victory will come.

“I was cock sure of winning the election as for what margin I did not know,” he revealed.

After having served the NDC in a General Secretary position for 17 years, Mr Nketia decided to contest the chairmanship race and got the mandate from the delegates.

Mr Nketia did not only beat Mr Ofosu-Ampofo but two other contenders – Samuel Yaw Adusei and Nii Armah Ashittey.

Mr Nketia polled 5,569 votes while his closest contender, the incumbent, polled 2,892 votes.

The other two candidates, Nii Armah Ashittey and Samuel Yaw Adusei polled 38 and 52 votes, respectively.

Popularly called General Mosquito, he addressed last week’s purported leaked tape in which he was captured saying his NDC side failed to collate the 2020 election results due to the malfunction of an IT system installed by then-Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.

In Mr Nketia’s view, the tape pushed his margin of win up.

“I won massively because of the said leaked tape. Even though the tape was not leaked at all, people branded it leaked tape to undo my campaign,” he noted.

“Thus, ending up doing the magic for Saturday’s massive win.”

He said the information on the said tape confirmed the information lingering in the minds of the delegates and as well as the public.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah made the admission that the leaked tape aided his victory over his former boss while speaking in an interview on the mid-day news on Accra 100.5 FM on Monday, December 19, 2022.

“If I knew it was going to be the trump card for my victory, I would have paid for the media to play it, but the media ended up playing it for free because it was branded leaked tape,” he remarked.

He denied the tape has created a problem for the NDC.

He accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of meddling in the internal affairs of the NDC by sharing money on behalf of some aspirants at the congress ground.
