Go back to the classroom – Education Ministry directs striking NAGRAT members

Despite their refusal to call off their strike action, the government is asking the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) to do what is right after the release of over forty-nine million Ghana cedis to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to settle the delayed payment of their   transfer grants as well as other outstanding allowances due teachers in the country.

“Be honourables and go back to classroom as schools have been reopened and your services are needed”, Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Education Ministry, Ekwow Vincent Assafuah charged on Kumasi FM’s morning show in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

According to the PRO, unlike the past regimes, the Akufo-Addo led administration is committed to ensure every outstanding due GES staff is settled hence, a move to release the recent quantum to show the government’s commitment.

“President Akufo-Addo and the NPP government will make sure all arrears are paid”, Mr. Ekwow Vincent Assafuah told political host, Nana Yaw Mensah Joel

Members of NAGRAT together with the Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT) are currently on strike over the newly introduced Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS) acquired by the Public Services Commission, unpaid allowances and delayed promotions among others.

Government amidst the pressure by the Teachers released an amount of about GHS50 million cedis to calm the tension at the Labour front.

But the President of NAGRAT Mr. Christian Addai-Poku has insisted the payment by the government to them is only a fraction of their demands, hence will not hasten to withdraw from its industrial action for now.

“This is addressing aspects of the problem for all teachers. If the Public Services Commission sits with the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and all other stakeholders and could cede off that Human Resource Management to the Ghana Education Service, we would have been solving this problem to a very large extent,” he said

Meanwhile, NAGRAT will decide on their next line of action after a meeting with the National Labour Commission later today Wednesday September 11, 2019.
