The Ashanti regional police command has said it will deal drastically with any Ghanaian trader who foments trouble at Suame Magazine in Kumasi.

The command said it held a meeting with the members of the Ghana Union Traders Association and their Nigerian counterparts in the region on Tuesday, 18 June 2019 and all the parties agreed that the temporarily closed Nigerian shops could open on Wednesday and, so, the police command was taken by surprise when the Ghanaian traders charged on their Nigerian counterparts today.

Addressing the media in Kumasi on Wednesday, 19 June 2019, the PRO of the regional police command, ASP Godwin Ahianyo said the national executives of GUTA will be meeting with the local members and their Nigerian counterparts today to iron out issues.

Mr Ahianyo said the police will not tolerate the vandalism that took place on Wednesday.

He said both national and local GUTA members, as well as their Nigerian counterparts, will be at the meeting.

“They have also assured us that they will talk to their members and whoever misbehaves again, they will give that person up and allow the security to do their work.

“We sent our men in mufti to go to Suame only for them to meet these characters and the behaviour they put up. We decided to use dialogue but we are saying that after their meeting if anybody tries to foment trouble that person would be dealt with mercilessly.”
