The Ghana Police Service has announced the recovery of the lifeless bodies of the two officers who went missing after their canoe capsized on the Oda River in the Ashanti Region.

“The bodies of the two police officers have been retrieved from the Oda River,” the Service said on Facebook Friday, adding: “Investigations are ongoing.”

Local divers joined the Regional Police Crime Scene Officers to recover the bodies after close to 72 hours of search, an opinion leader told DailyMailGh.com, adding: “They have been declared dead.”

The rescue team

The two have been named as No. 50287 L/Cpl. Amedius Akwesi Boateng and No. 48515 L/Cpl Stephen Kyeremeh – both of the Obuasi Division.

The two were part of a four-member team pursuing some suspected armed robbers who had launched an attack on small scale miners at Kobro, near Obuasi in the Amansie Central District.

The officers in an effort to proceed to the scene hired a canoe to cross the Oda River, which had burst its bank. The robbers upon seeing the police escaped from the scene.

“On their return, the canoe on which all were onboard capsized and the two sergeants managed to swim ashore whilst the other two Lance Corporals together with their service rifles are yet-to-be-traced,” police said in an incident report.

The two other officers who survived in the tragic incident have been named as Sgt. James Ahiman and Sgt. Isaac Nyamekye. Police are yet to give details of their status at the time of filing this report.
