Kumasi floods: Toddler drowns at Sawaaba ( Photos+ video)

A one year old boy is reportedly missing with six others hospitalized following a torrential rains that caused widespread damage and flooding in parts of Ashanti Region

The victim, now missing according to report drown in the Pelele River at Sawaba in the Asokore Mampong Municipality after long hours of rainfall on Thursday June 24,2021.

The child was travelling with the mother on a tricycle, popularly known as ‘pragyia’, when they got stuck in floodwaters.

In an attempt to continue the journey on foot, the child was swept away by the floods.

The rider, Ahmed Mohammed, says his tricycle got stuck in the flood with the five people onboard, including the child.

The passengers attempted making the journey on foot despite the heavy current of the flood waters.

“I pulled the hand brake to stop the tricycle from moving. The passengers kept shouting in fear. They all got down immediately the tricycle stopped. That was when I saw them fall into the floodwater. It took some men to help them out but we didn’t get the child,” he said.

The Assembly Member for Sawaba Electoral Area Hon Samuel in an interview with OTEC News reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng said they are doing all they can to located the missing child.

He disclosed that four persons were drown in the river but residents in the area could only manage to save only three.

He added that the sad incident happened when a tricycle bike carrying the four persons fell into a gutter closed to the submerged brigde.

Hon Samuel noted that all efforts to locate the boy have so far proven futile.

Officials from the Natural Disaster Management Organization NADMO from the Region, according to Kwame Agyenim Boateng have also begun a search for the missing boy.

Six persons at Atasemanse in the Kumasi Metropolis were also said to have been hospitalized after a wall collapsed on them during the heavy down pour with 30 houses submerging in the process

Commuters and other road users in other parts of the region were left stranded after the heavy rainfall

Major areas including Sawaba, Aboabo, Anloga,Santasi, Kwadaso, Tafo Sepe Boukrom, Bantama, have been flooded, with a number of houses submerged following the downpour.
