If we don’t sit up, vigilantism will mar the 2020 election and beyond – COP Kofi Boakye

The Director-General, Police Professional Standards Bureau of the Ghana Police Service, COP Kofi Boakye has cautioned that if stakeholders who are concerned with vigilantism don’t sit up, the country will be plunged into a state of chaos.

He explained that civil society is very much needed in this fight because if it is left in the hands of politicians alone, we will fail.

He was speaking at a conference by the Police Service a few week ago and stated that the rate at which vigilantism is increasing would spell doom for Ghana, especially considering the fact that the country will be going to the polls very soon.
He stated that many stake holders, especially the political parties have a major role to play in curbing this menace, because they cannot pretend to be solving the issue, but keep on supporting them with money and appointments.

He said “…the whole criminal justice system should support the fight against vigilantism. And when I say that, I mean the Police, the Attorney General and the Judiciary”.
“We cannot pay lip service to the fight against vigilantism and covertly support them with money and appointments,” he added.
This comes as a statement of hindsight as it will be recalled that the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election this week turned violent at one polling station after uniformed men who are believed to have allegiance to the ruling NPP stormed the polling station.

There were earlier clashes between some group of people believed to belong to the two strongest opposing parties in Ghana, NPP and NDC and it resulted in some casualties.
