GJA names award category after Hussein-Suale

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has named its Investigative Journalism award category after slain investigative reporter Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

This was made known by GJA President, Roland Affail Monney, at a memorial ceremony on Friday, 8 February 2019 at the Ghana International Press Centre.

The gesture is aimed at immortalising the journalist who worked with Tiger Eye PI together with award-winning investigative reporter Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Mr Hussein-Suale was assassinated on 16 January 2019 at Madina, a suburb of Accra while heading home around 10 p.m.

The police say six suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder. They were questioned and granted bail.

Apart from the six suspects, ACP David Senanu Eklu, Director-General, Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, said Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong; former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi; and Ahmed’s boss, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, have all been cautioned and given forms to submit their statement to the police.

Mr Monney said at the memorial service that: “It is very heartwarming for me to note that six suspected people have been arrested”, adding: “The GJA commends the Ghana police most highly for this very significant progress in investigations.”

Meanwhile, Ahmed’s family has made a passionate appeal to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the killers to give it to the police.

Media practitioners, the police, the clergy and the general public attended the solemn memorial service. Amnesty International, GIBA, UNESCO and the Minority and Majority caucuses in Parliament were among the institutions that gave solidarity messages.
