Abesim murders: Buried intestines of victim exhumed, say police

The remains were discovered on a cocoa farm after officers interrogated the prime suspect in the case, Richard Appiah

The Ghana Police Service has said it has discovered the intestines of one of the child victims in the Abesim murder case.

The remains were discovered on a cocoa farm after officers interrogated the prime suspect, Richard Appiah.

“The intestines were buried in a cocoa farm at Abesim, which the police have since exhumed for pathological analysis and forensic examination in Accra,” the acting director general in charge of public affairs for the Ghana Police, ACP Kwesi Ofori, confirmed to Asaase News.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the Abesim murder case. They include the 28-year-old prime suspect, Richard Appiah. The police said they have also retrieved the bodies of two teenagers who were found in Appiah’s living room.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Beatrice Adu on The Big Bulletin on Wednesday (25 August), ACP Ofori said the police have gone far with their investigations, and he gave the assurance that all murder cases are being given the necessary attention.

“All regional crime officers within the 18 police regions have been tasked to make sure they get to the bottom of whatever cases are before them.

“We’ve shown commitment and we’ll do whatever possible to unravel these cases. We’re paying extra attention to all developments in the country be it murder, stealing or robbery until we get to the bottom of it,” ACP Ofori said.

But some members of the minority in Parliament would not even allow the police to go further with their investigations into the cases of murder across the country. Before the security agency could come up with what it has found, two members of the Minority in Parliament have also petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to begin its investigations into the killings that took place during the 2020 general elections.

The two Minority members – the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the former energy minister Emmanuel Kofi Buah – say they do not trust the police to do a good job in the matter.

Speaking on The Big Bulletin after filing the petition, Ablakwa said it is time to end the impunity over killings in Ghana.
